Synthetic Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that mimic the effects of THC, the main active ingredient of cannabis. They bind to the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and were developed to treat pain. The two most common synthetic cannabinoids were JWH-018 and JWH-073. New generations of synthetic cannabinoids are continuously emerging to replace the synthetic cannabinoids that have been made illegal.

UR-144 is the new generation of synthetic cannabinoids and is chemically different to the first generation. The napthlene ring in JWH-018 is substituted with a tetramethylcyclopropyl group to form UR-144. UR-144 is a synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist (SCRA). It is a psychoactive substance and has effects similar to delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), though slightly less potent than THC.
