Vitamin B12 (VB12), also known as cobalamin, is a natural vitamin with a molecular weight of 1355.37Da and is an important biological cofactor and nutrient. It cannot be synthesized in the human body and is seldom found in products of plant origin. The primary dietary sources of vitamin B12 are meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products and as such the deficiency has been reported to be the highest among populations with predominantly a vegetarian or vegan diet. Vitamin B12 participates in the metabolism of human cells, affects the synthesis and regulation of DNA, and also participates in the synthesis of fatty acids and energy generation. Its primary physiological function is to promote the development and maturation of red blood cells, improve the utilization of folic acid, and maintain the metabolism and function of nerve myelin. Deficiency of VB12 is mainly reflected in the blood and nervous system and can lead to diseases such as pernicious anemia, dementia and mental depression. In addition, the elevation of VB12 levels are a marker for certain diseases, including renal failure, liver disease, diabetes and haematological diseases. Clinically, it is mainly used for the auxiliary diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia.
