IL-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine secreted by the innate immune system in response to initial injury and infection. It has a wide range of biological roles in inflammation, immunomodulatory, hematopoietic and tumor. IL-6 is involved in the occurrence and development of many diseases. Its blood level is closely related to inflammation, viral infection, and autoimmune diseases. It changes earlier than CRP and PCT. Studies have shown that after a bacterial infection, IL-6 levels rise rapidly and reach their peak after 2h and persist for a long time. PCT increases after 2h, and CRP increases rapidly after 6h. Its mechanism is: when the body infected or tissue damage and other white blood cells are activated macrophages, produce interleukin 6 (IL-6), IL-6 induced liver cells after the creation of c-reactive protein (CRP) and calcitonin original (PCT) and inducing mature B cells to produce antibodies, therefore directly related to degree of inflammatory bowel disease and infection.

IL-6 acts like a messenger which tells other immune cells to fight the infection. Some amount of IL-6 will be made to help prepare your body to fight an infection. A low level of IL-6 may be expected for most patients with a less severe inflammatory response. When your body makes too much IL-6, it can cause a severe inflammatory response. A high level of IL-6 may be one sign that the inflammation is severe and could lead to complcations.
