The Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Rapid Test Kit is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in whole blood, serum, or plasma to aid in the screening an ambulatory adult population for primary hypothyroidism by medical professionals. The thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is a glycoprotein hormone synthesised and secreted by thyrotropic cells in the anterior pituitary gland, which regulates the endocrine function of the thyroid. TSH (with a half-life of about an hour) stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete the hormone thyroxine (T4), which has only a slight eect on metabolism. T4 is converted to triiodothyronine (T3), which is the active hormone that stimulates metabolism a of almost every tissue in the body. About 80% of this conversion is in the liver and other organs, and 20% in the thyroid itself.
Increase in serum concentration of TSH is primary responsible for the synthesis of thyroxine (T4), and in conjunction with decreased T4 concentration a tool for the diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism. The expected increase in TSH concentrations demonstrates the classical negative feedback system between the pituitary and thyroid glands. Primary thyroid gland failure reduces secretion of the thyroid hormones, which in turn stimulates the release of TSH from the pituitary. Testing of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in the blood is considered the best initial test for hypothyroidism and is generally regarded as the most sensitive indicator available for the diagnosis of primary and secondary hypothyroidism.
