Lactose intolerance refers to the impaired digestion and absorption of lactose due to the lack of lactase enzyme on the mucosal surface of the small intestine, accompanied by a series of clinical symptoms such as abdominal distension, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. In the normal circumstances, lactase breaks down milk sugar (lactose) into monosaccharides (glucose and galactose), which can then be absorbed into the bloodstream. But due to the deficiency or reduced activity of the enzyme lactase, the lactose intolerance (hypolactasia) is unable to digest and break down lactose, the main sugar in milk, into monosaccharides, resulting in lactose not being absorbed by the small intestine. The unabsorbed lactose is transferred through the gastrointestinal tract to the large intestine where it is fermented by bacteria in the gut.

It is estimated that approximately 15-20% of Western and Northern Europeans, and 90% of Asians, Africans and Native Americans suffer from lactose intolerance. Often the symptoms remain undiagnosed, and, thus lactose intolerance may remain untreated for years. Lactose intolerance may cause the following gastrointestinal symptoms after the intake of lactose: nausea, flatulence, abdominal bloating, cramps and pain, as well as diarrhea. Lactose intolerance also affects the absorption of iron and zinc, which in turn has a major impact on brain development in infants and young children, so it is important to detect lactose intolerance in vitro and get it treated in a timely manner.
