CEA (Carcinoembryonic antigen) is a highly glycosy-lated glycoprotein, which was thought to be an oncofetal protein specific for the colon. CEA is normally produced during the development of a fetus but disappears or becomes very low in the blood of healthy adults. However, increased levels may be present in colorectum, gastric area, breast, ovary, liver, lung, pancreas, biliary and medullary thyroid carcinoma, as well as in some benign conditions like smoking, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, cirrhosis, hepatitis and pancreatitis. So it is used as a tumor marker in adult ages.

CEA is often used to monitor patients with cancers, especially colorectal carcinoma, after surgery to measure the response to therapy and whether the disease is recurring. In the early diagnosis of disease recurence following surgical resection, a serial increase in CEA levels is the first evidence oftumour. in patients with disseminated tumours, serial determinations are usefulfor monitoring response to therapy. CEA values decrease with effective treatment, while they increase with disease refractory to therapy or progressive metastases.
