Albumin is one of the major plasma proteins. Albumin is normally found in the blood and filtered by the kidneys. When the kidneys are working properly, albumin is usually present in very low concentration in urine. However, when the kidneys are damaged, small amounts of albumin leak into the urine. This condition is called Microalbumin (MALB). MALB is most frequently caused by kidney damage from diabetes. However, many other conditions can lead to kidney damage, such as high blood pressure, heart failure, cirrhosis, or systemic lupus erythmatosus(SLE). MALB, the abnormal elevation of the urinary albumin excretion rate, is often one of the first signs of renal disease or damage that can lead to renal failure. MALB is the most sensitive indicator of the routine inspection of early kidney lesions. Detection of MALB can aid in the early detection and treatment of kidney disease in diabetics.
