The Candida albicans Antigen Rapid Test Kit (Vaginal Swab) is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of candida albicans antigens in female vaginal swabs. This test is intended to be used as an aid in the diagnosis of Candida albicans infection.

Candida albicans is the most prevalent fungal species of the human microbiota and asymptomatically colonizes many areas of the body (gut, vagina, oral mucosa, skin), in particular the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts of healthy individuals. Under normal circumstances, Candida albicans lives in 80% of the human population with no harmful effects, although overgrowth results in candidiasis, such as oropharyngeal or vulvovaginal candidiasis. Mildly immunocompromised individuals (such as HIV-positive patients) can suffer from frequent infections. Candidiasis also may occur in the blood and in the genital tract. A mortality rate of 40% has been reported for patients with systemic candidiasis due to C. albicans.

Candida albicans can cause vulva and vaginal inflammation in women, mainly manifested as sticky vaginal discharge, yellow or cheese like spots, vulva/vaginal itching or burning, bean dreg-like leucorrhea and other clinical symptoms. Candida albicans accounts for approximately 80-90% of all vulvovaginitis cases. Approximately, 75% of women will be diagnosed with Candida at least once during their life time. 40-50% of them will suffer recurrent infections and 5% are estimated to develop chronic Candidiasis. Predisposing factors for VVC include pregnancy, use of high-oestrogen oral contraceptives, diabetes mellitus, taking of wide spectrum antibiotics and corticosteroid, premenstrual phase of the menstrual cycle, depressed cell mediated immunity (e.g. AIDS) and obesity.
