Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a glycated form of hemoglobin that is measured primarily to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over prolonged periods of time. HbA1c is formed by the attachment of glucose residue in blood to hemoglobin molecule. The attachment of the glucose occurs continually over the entire lifespan of the red cell (average 100-120 days) and is directly proportional to the concentration of glucose in blood. The HbA1c level therefore reflects the average concentration of glucose in the blood over the past 2-3 months.

The chronic elevated blood sugar level of persons with diabetes mellitus will over time cause damage to the small vessels of the body. This damage develops slowly over years and is known to cause late complications. Good metabolic control, i.e. lowering the HbA1c concentration, has proven to delay the onset and slow the progression of diabeteslate complications cluding retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. It is concluded that measurements of HbA1c can be used to diagnose diabetes mellitus. When in agreement with national regulations, HbA1c Test can be used as an aid in the diagnosis of diabetes and as an aid in identifying patients who may be at risk for developing diabete. HbA1c is the “gold standard” of evaluation for long-term blood glucose controls.
