Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) is a Gram-positive bacterium capable of causing various infectious diseases in humans. Clinically, the most common diseases caused by this bacterium are streptococcal pharyngitis and impetigo. Streptococcal pharyngitis spreads through respiratory droplets or contact, while impetigo is primarily transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. After invading throat or skin tissues, the bacteria cause disease by producing multiple toxins and enzymes. Rapid diagnosis is achieved medically by detecting Group A Streptococcus antigens in throat swab or wound swab samples. This antigen detection (targeting specific polysaccharide antigens) is considered a reliable indicator for assisting in the diagnosis of acute infections. Streptococcal pharyngitis is extremely common among children and adolescents.

Group A streptococci elicit a robust immune response, meaning infections may trigger severe complications even when the primary infection is mild. Group A Streptococcus is the primary pathogen causing bacterial pharyngitis, and its infection is associated with multiple severe complications: acute rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart disease, post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, scarlet fever, toxic shock syndrome, necrotizing fasciitis (“flesh-eating bacteria” infection), and autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS). Therefore, testing suspected patients for Group A Streptococcus is now considered a “critical diagnostic and therapeutic step.”
